14. Roy
Daniel VAN CLEAVE (10)(3) (14)
was born on 8 Feb 1881 in Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas. He
died on 10 Mar 1956 in Ursula, Sebastian, Arkansas. He was buried
in Morris Cemetery, Bloomer, Arkansas. He was a carpenter; the
family raised and shipped strawberries and potatoes, the second
daughter, Edith learned to drive a truck and took the shipments
to Van Buren to the train. His mother lived with the family until
her death in 1934. Roy had a wood working shop above the potato
cellar where he made occasional tables and telephone "gossip"
benches as well as small items, picture frames, etc.
He was married to Nellie Lee VANDERBURG on 7 Feb 1904 in Mill
Creek, Sebastian County, Arkansas.
15. Nellie
Lee VANDERBURG (10)(3)
was born on 6 Feb 1884 in Mill Creek, Sebastian, Arkansas. She
died on 10 Sep 1973 in Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas. She was
buried in Morris Cemetery, Bloomer, Arkansas. Nell loved flowers;
she frequently walked to "Big Creek" (about 2 miles
to the west) and brought home wild plants which she added to
the front yard. She gathered much Van Cleave information during
the late 1940s and early 50s from Mrs. Georgia Gosney Wisda in
Ohio. Her grand daughters later learned that Mrs. Wisda was an
expert on the Van Cleave/Cleef family.
Children were:
i. Doris Mae VAN CLEAVE
was born on 23 Nov 1904 in Cavanaugh, Sebastian County, Arkansas.
She died on 19 May 1983 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. She
was buried in Welcome Home Cemetery, Grayson, Caldwell Parish,
Louisiana. Doris was the first of the family to have diabetes,
possibly inherited from her maternal grandmother, Lula Dean Garrett
Vanderburg. She and her husband moved their family to Louisiana
where he became a building contractor. She married Otto A. Vanlandingham
14 November 1923

iii. Leland Earl VAN CLEAVE
was born on 5 Sep 1908 in Cavanaugh, Sebastian,County, Arkansas.
He died on 17 Mar 1970 in Ursula, Sebastian, Arkansas. He was
buried in Morris Cemetery, Bloomer, Arkansas. Leland was a very
nervous child, chewing his fingernails until his fingertips bled.
He attended very little school because of the nervousness. He
remained at home, helping with the farm work and taking care
of the mules.
iv. Guy Lamar VAN CLEAVE
was born on 27 Aug 1911 in Cavanaugh, Sebastian, Arkansas. He
died on 18 Feb 2000 in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co, Arkansas. Guy
quit school in the 6th grade and left home at age 15. He became
a fireman in Wichita, Kansas, lying about his age in order to
get the job. Because of the lie he was required to work 23 years
before retiring. He was also an electrician. Following his retirement
from the fire department he and Mildred returned to the home
place and looked after his mother until she was placed in a nursing
home in Fort Smith. He married Mildred Gulley 2 August 1930
v. Edna Alice VAN CLEAVE
was born on 14 Aug 1913 in Cavanaugh, Sebastian, Arkansas. She
died on 2 Oct 1965 in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas.
She was buried in US National Cem., Fort Smith, Arkansas. After
a very brief (6 weeks) marriage to someone else, Edna married
Ward Bush. While he was overseas during World War II she and
their son Van moved to Wichita, Kansas and she worked in an airplane
factory. She married Ward Bush 28 September 1935
vi. Clifford Morrisey VAN
CLEAVE was born on 16 Aug 1917 in Cavanaugh, Sebastian, Arkansas.
He died on 22 Aug 1951 in Rural Belle Plains, Sumner Co. KS.
He was buried in Morris Cemetery, Bloomer, Arkansas. served in
the Army WWII in the South Pacific; a carpenter He married Christene
Brooks 30 October 1946
vii. Ralph Daniel VAN CLEAVE
was born on 28 Mar 1920 in Cavanaugh, Sebastian, Arkansas. He
died on 23 Sep 1993 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas.
Ralph played football at Charleston High School and would have
received a scholarship to Arkansas Tech at Russellville but his
mother threw away the letter. He joined the Marines and served
in the Pacific area in the Aleutian Ilands, Sipan, Iwo Jima,,
earning 2 Purple Hearts but only received one. Following the
war he was an electrician, working in St. Louis and Wichita.
viii. Wallace "Hank"
Nathaniel VAN CLEAVE was born on 25 Sep 1922 in Ursula, Sebastian
County, Arkansas. He died on 15 Nov 1995 in Fort Smith, Sebastian,
Arkansas. He was buried on 17 Nov 1995. Wallace was 18 years
old when he joined the Army and it was his first time away from
home. He served in North Africa, sometimes driving a jeep for
General Dwight Eisenhower. On one occasion when he was in Germany
he ran into his brother-in-law Ward Bush and they were able to
have a brief visit. Following his military service he returned
home where he married and worked at the chicken plant in nearby
Bloomer, Arkansas. At one time the family moved to Arizona for
a brief period. He married Audra Faye Williams 28 October 1946
ix. Irma Lucille VAN CLEAVE
was born on 22 Sept. in Ursula, Sebastian County, Arkansas. She
and husband, C. J. owned The Fort Smith Shade Factory for many
years. They made and installed venetian blinds for the Fort Smith
area. She married C.J. Inklebarger 1 July
x. Wanda Lee VAN CLEAVE
was born on 14 Aug. in Ursula, Sebastian County, Arkansas. The
youngest child, Wanda was her father's "pet". She worked
at Camp Chaffee following graduation from Charleston High School
where she had been active in the 4-H club. It was at Chaffee
that she met her future husband, Claude Tollenaar. After their
marriage they were stationed in North Carolina briefly. They
had a dairy farm in Diamond, MO for several years, where their
children were born. In 1960 Claude moved the family to Manitoba,
Canada for a couple of years before moving on west to Slave Lake,
Alberta where they raised black Angus cattle. She married Claude
Tollenaar 5 December
